‘To step into the darkness of an Andrew Carnie installation is to be effortlessly
transported into a world that is both strangely phantasmagorical and comfortingly
familiar. It is a place where one cannot help but be immersed amid slow, cycling
revelations of the intricate structures that are normally hidden deep within our bodies’
Marius Kwint, Reader in Visual Culture at the University of Portsmouth
The Winter Tree features the new ambitious large scale synchronized digital video
work Here There and Everywhere by the Winchester based artist Andrew Carnie.
The central theme of the work concerns the internal and external, concentrating upon
the tree like biological forms inside us and the trees outside us. The immersive work
lasts twenty minutes and takes the form of projected branching forms onto
translucent screens, exploring ideas of how the dendritic form in our bodies’ the
neuron, reflects, mirrors, the branching forms in nature around us. Also included in
the show is a series of further dendritic works. These drawings and paintings have
been produced by Carnie over the last fifteen years. The new video work was
inspired by reviewing and considering recent scientific developments in neurology
and develops and extends upon Carnie’s highly regarded work Magic Forest which
toured the world after its first showing at the Science Museum London in 2002.
